How to Prepare for Your Photography Session
A great photograph begins long before the shutter clicks. Whether you are booking a portrait, couples, family, or event session in Delaware or the surrounding region, a little preparation helps you feel relaxed, look natural, and get the most from your time in front of the lens. This guide walks through every step so you arrive confident and leave with frames you will treasure.
Choose the right session type
The experience you book shapes the entire day. Portrait sessions focus on a single subject or a small group and lean into personality and expression. Couples and engagement sessions capture connection and movement. Family sessions balance candid moments with a few posed groupings. Events — from intimate gatherings to full wedding days — document the atmosphere and the people who made it meaningful. If you are unsure which fits, share your vision when you inquire and we will help you choose.
Plan your wardrobe
Wear what makes you feel like yourself. Solid, neutral tones and muted earth colors photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you. Avoid large logos, busy patterns, and neon shades, which distract and date an image. Layers and textures — a jacket, a knit, a scarf — add depth. For group sessions, coordinate a shared palette rather than matching outfits exactly; the goal is harmony, not uniformity. Bring a second outfit if your package includes a wardrobe change.
Pick a location and time
Delaware and the Eastern Shore offer a remarkable range of backdrops — coastal dunes and lighthouses along the shore, the historic streets of Dover and Wilmington, quiet farmland, and state parks with mature forest. Choose a setting that fits the story you want to tell. Timing matters as much as place: the hour after sunrise and the two hours before sunset — the golden hour — produce soft, warm, directional light that flatters skin and adds dimension. Midday sun is harsh and creates strong shadows, so we schedule most outdoor sessions around these windows.
What to expect on the day
Sessions are unhurried and collaborative. We will start with a brief conversation to help you settle, then move through a mix of guided poses and candid moments. You do not need modeling experience — direction is part of the service. Most portrait and couples sessions run 60 to 90 minutes; events and weddings vary by coverage. If children are part of the session, we follow their pace and build in breaks.
After your session
Within a few days you will receive a private online gallery with your edited images. You choose your favorites for prints, albums, and digital delivery. Turnaround depends on the scope of the session: portraits and couples typically deliver in one to two weeks, while weddings and large events may take four to six weeks as each frame is individually color-graded. Every image receives the same cinematic treatment you see across this portfolio.
